Cisco documents the MG line as providing reliable connectivity over a cellular connection for network edge devices, together with connectivity insights that report the quality of that connection. The reporting matters as much as the link: a cellular uplink that is technically up but marginal is the failure mode that costs a site a day, and the dashboard surfaces signal quality rather than leaving it to be discovered.

HTS carries four models, each in a standard and an external-antenna form. The MG21 and MG41 are LTE gateways. The MG51 and MG52 are the 5G models, for sites where 5G coverage is available and the extra capacity is worth the difference. The E variants — MG21E, MG41E, MG51E, MG52E — are the same gateway with external antenna connectors instead of internal antennas. That choice is not cosmetic. Internal antennas are correct where the gateway can sit near a window or in an open area with usable signal. External antennas are necessary where the gateway has to live in a comms cupboard, a metal enclosure, a basement, or the middle of a building, and the antenna needs to be somewhere the gateway cannot go.

The three deployments worth naming are new-site bring-up before a wired circuit is installed, failover for a site whose single wired circuit is a business risk, and permanent connectivity for locations where a wired circuit is not practical at all — construction compounds, temporary retail, remote plant, and outdoor equipment. Each has a different sizing answer. HTS quotes MG against your carrier and SIM arrangement, the coverage actually measured at the installation point rather than the coverage map, whether the gateway or the antenna needs to be the thing that moves, and licence alignment with your existing Meraki organisation.

How to choose

  • LTE (MG21, MG41) versus 5G (MG51, MG52) based on measured coverage at the site, not the coverage map
  • Internal antennas versus the E variants with external antenna connectors for cupboards, basements, and metal enclosures
  • Primary uplink at a site with no wired option versus failover behind an existing circuit
  • Carrier and SIM arrangement, which is a separate procurement from the gateway itself
  • Whether the installation point has usable signal, or an antenna run is required to reach one
